Epiphany II
19 January 2003
Pontifical High Mass with Reception & Confirmation
11
ORGAN - Fugue in G Major Felix Mendelssohn
At the Reception of the Bishop
ANTIPHON - Sacerdos et Pontifex
O priest and bishop, thou worker of all virtues, good shepherd of thy
people, pray for us unto the Lord.
CANTICLE - Benedictus Sir Edward Elgar
RESPONSORY - Ecce Sacerdos magnus Elgar
Behold, a great prelate, who in his days was pleasing unto God. Therefore
with an oath the Lord hath made him to increase among his people. V.
He hath given unto him the blessing of all nations: and hath confirmed
his covenant upon his own head. Therefore
V. Glory be
Therefore
V. Behold, O God, our defender.
R. And look upon the face of thine anointed.
V. O Lord, save thy servant.
R. Who putteth his trust in thee.
V. Send him help, O Lord, from thy sanctuary.
R. And strengthen him out of Sion.
V. Let not the enemy be able to do him violence.
R. Nor the son of wickedness have power to hurt him.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto thee.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
O GOD, who visitest the humble, and dost comfort them with a father's
love; pour down thy grace upon us who are gathered together in this
place, that through the presence of those in whom thou dwellest, we
may feel thy presence within ourselves. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
ANTIPHON - Cum iter
When he had started going to the sea the people cried out with
loud voices, O Lord Jesus Christ, save him: And Clement responded, weeping,
Heavenly Father, receive my spirit.
V. The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree.
R. And shall spread abroad like a cedar in Libanus.
Let us pray.
OEVERLASTING Shepherd, look down in mercy on thy flock: and as thou
didst choose blessed Clement, thy Martyr and Chief Bishop, to be pastor
and ruler of thy Church; so at his intercession defend it with thy continual
protection. Through. Amen.
HYMN Grafton
Sing we in triumphant gladness
Jesu's bright Epiphany;
Sing of Him Whom wise men worshipped
As the Son of God Most High,
Hasting from the Chaldee nation
To adore His Majesty.
2 Christ, of Whom sang all the Prophets,
Coming hither man to save,
Christ, Who stripped Himself of glory,
Took the form of mortal slave,
Very God before creation,
Borne by Mary in the cave.
3 Christ, of Whom in vision Balaam
Spake, beholding Him afar,
Out of Israel comes a Sceptre,
Out of Jacob comes a Star,
He shall smite all Moab's corners,
Vanquish Edom in the war.
4 Unto Him the Eastern sages
Make their threefold offering,
Myrrh and gold and fragrant incense
As His fitting presents bring.
Myrrh for Man, for God the incense,
Gold for their anointed King.
5 Then in dreams an Angel warns them
Herod's royal halls to shun,
Herod, trembling for his kingdom,
Fearing Mary's Infant Son,
So as goes the star before them,
Home their course is quickly run.
6 Then the tyrant, wild with anger,
Foiled in his bad stratagem,
Seeketh out the little children
Through the coasts of Bethlehem,
And he sendeth forth his soldiers
With command to slaughter them.
7 Now let all the faithful people
To the organ's pealing sing,
Bearing gifts of mystic meaning
Unto Christ the Highest King,
Praying Him to keep His kingdom
Evermore beneath His wing.
V. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
R. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
V. There is one Body and one Spirit;
R. There is one hope in God's call to us;
V. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism;
R. One God and Father of all.
INTROIT - Omnis terra
ALL the earth shall worship thee, O God, and sing of thee: they shall
sing praise unto thy name, O thou Most Highest. Psalm 66. O be joyful
in God, all ye lands: sing praises unto the honour of his name: make
his praise to be glorious.
V. Glory be
All the earth
